Not only for jazz lovers

How do you like the idea of live music in a bar? What about organic Martini-style cocktails? If you are intrigued, visit the Puppet’s jazz bar on 5th avenue and 11th street.

The bar certainly stands out among other “places to drink.” First of all, not too many bars have live music. Secondly, very few owners invite two bands each day. At Puppet’s jazz, however, you have the opportunity to listen to a couple of different bands every evening. The only shortcoming is that you have to pay six dollar “music charge,” which is not a big deal as long as you enjoy the music.

And you will enjoy it. Foot tapping and dance movement are common in the place. The applause and approving exclamations are loud. Bands communicate with the audience and play from “real notes,” looking at the book in front of them. Good addition to it will be a cold mixed drink.

The cocktail menu offers you a few unusual choices. Organic Strawberry Lemontini and Organic Pometini sound seducing to any Martini lover. The drinks are made with crop organic vodka and natural juices. Beside those, you may be curious about Kombuchatini, also made with crop organic vodka and mysterious Kombucha, nothing but an oriental, supposedly Chinese, soft drink. It has a gingery, spiced flavor. You may also be appealed to a Coconut Saketini, but it might be disappointing.

The drink consists of sake, coconut and vanilla cream soda and is expected to be sweet. It is not sweet at all and in addition, the only thing you taste is chilled, strong sake that is not as great as the hot one. Warm sake, if you have ever tried it, burns your throat, heats your body and soothes your mind, whereas the chilled one just gets through. Besides sake, you taste a little bit of coconut, but you keep wondering where the promised “vanilla cream soda” is. The drink is quite strong and if you are not a Martini lover, go for a Margarita made with Patron Silver.

Remember that it’s better to drink after you eat, because alcohol has a bad influence on an empty stomach. There is an appetizers menu in case you feel hungry. Food doesn’t cost much, by the way. For example, you may try a Tofu dog for as little as three dollars. Drinks, however, are rather expensive for Brooklyn. You pay 12 dollars for a tini, the same price that you would pay at a bar in Manhattan. But don’t be greedy: after all, you are here for the music.

Whatever you like, whatever you enjoy, Puppet’s jazz bar is definitely a place worth trying, at least, once.
